The 2013 Quattroporte test vehicle was still heavily covered so the only recognizable parts are the headlamps, tail lights, windows, windshield, and door handles. It is hard to tell which parts will be heading to production as an element of the new Quattroporte.

You can determine the shape of the new car though. The general proportions look like it is very close to the current version with the voluptuous curves screaming that it will be the calling card for the Q-porte.

The Maserati Quattroporte is a very important piece on the sales chart of the company in order to keep up with competitors like the S63s of Mercedes and the Panameras of Porsche. Doing a good round at the ‘Ring of course is a must to be very credible in its segment.

Earlier reports have confirmed that Maserati is planning to use the 4.7L and the 4.5L revised Ferrari V8s for the upcoming SUV with stop-start system, lower emission, and direct fuel injection. These updated engines will also head to the engine bay of the Quattroporte with the same 8-speed automatic gearbox. Most likely during the launch, there will be the Quattroporte and the Quattroporte S but a more potent Sport GTS version might pop up after a year or two to keep the market talking about it and interested. The next Quattroporte has a big potential to have an all wheel drive setup and also a hybrid model.

We might be seeing the new Maserati Quattroporte during the upcoming Paris motor show this fall before an official roll out by next year. The sticker price should be higher than the current base of $131,500. There is also that space of the Levante, a Baby Quattroporte to enter the mid-size segment.

This vehicle will not be known as the Kubang.

Sergio Marchionne, the topman of Fiat, reiterated during the auto show in Detroit that the newly unwrapped concept vehicle Maserati Kubang which is scheduled to roll out in 2013 will just be purely Maserati.

The crossover from Maserati will be using the same platform being used for the Grand Cherokee and it will also be built at the production line of Chrysler at their Jefferson North factory in Detroit. One way to think about it is that the Maserati crossover will have some sperm donors which when you think about it includes Mercedes-Benz since they helped develop the architecture used by its M-Class and the one being used for the Grand Cherokee.

You will not find a Hemi V8 by Chrysler under its hood though. Marchionne revealed that under the hood of the Kubang will be twin turbo V8 4.0L powerplant which is Ferrari-based. This engine can give a monstrous output of 500 horsepower.

Marchionne explained that a Maserati will not be a Maserati if they do not use a Ferrari engine. Maserati has tapped the services of Paolo Martinelli to help develop new powertrains. Martinelli was the former engine development head of the F1 team of Ferrari.

According to a Fiat representative, the powerplant for the new Maserati crossover will be built in Maranello and will be linked to the brand’s automatic gearbox with eight speeds. Chassis tuning will also be performed by another team in Modena.

The first version of the Kubang concept which really looks different from the latest interpretation was welcomed by fans in 2003 but was later on shelved.

A lot of people cannot imagine an SUV in the Maserati showrooms but it is a reality as the brand has unveiled the concept vehicle Maserati Kubang during the motor show in Frankfurt just last month.

In a recent report in Italian newspapers, Maserati might actually be using the Cinqueporte nameplate for the Kubang SUV. This is following the filing of a patent for the name Cinqueporte in Europe. Many agree that the name is a lot better than Kubang.

The Kubang tag is actually a name that has been used before by Maserati for a concept vehicle. Something in the name Kubang does not sound right for an SUV and a lot of fans are glad that the car manufacturer might actually be dropping it in favor of a more classy name. Cinqueporte actually gives it away as it really suggests a five door vehicle.

So far we have not head any plans of Maserati planning to produce an estate version of any members of their current lineup. The only realistic application of the Cinqueporte name is to be attached at the back of a Maserati SUV unless the carmaker was able to conceal a plan for a new vehicle from everyone else.

Translating the new name it really comes down as the Maserati Five Door which is pretty much odd still but it works when it is in its Italian form. Anyway, whether it will be Kubang or the Cinqueporte, it will still be an SUV from Maserati that has a Ferrari built engine under its hood with the body inspired by the Grand Cherokee.

The Kubang concept that took spotlight in Frankfurt has a very prominent grille, LED headlights, and vents. The sloping roofline of the SUV takes you to the unique tailgate. The specs of the Kubang or the future Maserati Cinqueporte have not been revealed yet but the powerful powerplant will be linked with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The crossover has also unique steering system, brakes, and suspension setup.

Their works of arts are often treated with this beautiful black paint exterior finish and massive, pumped up powertrains turning an ordinary sports car into a superior, lean, mean, sports car machine.

Before we have seen Anderson Germany’s transformation on the Aston Martin DBS and the Porsche Panamera. This time, the automobile industry witnessed its latest creation—the Gran Turismo S Superior Black Edition—and it doesn’t come any meaner than this one.

We know how this works, you take a standard model of a sports car and the tuning company will pimp it up to aggressive sports car perfection with upgraded features from the exterior to the interior and not to mention, what’s under the hood.

The Gran Turismo S Superior Black Edition now boasts of a kickass matte black body finish. The tailgate, air inlets, and roof ledges were treated to a carbon fiber trim. The rims now also come with a beautiful glossy black carbon frame in 21”. With lots of carbon fiber trims done, the total weight of the car is reduced by almost 28lbs.

Exterior comes with Alcantara black leather seats with red rhombus trims as well as carbon fiber finishes. Under the hood are improved exhaust system and software optimization features. The retuned Gran Turismo S Superior Black Edition now has 492 HP (standard is 440HP) in a 4.7-liter v8 engine. Now that’s a mean sports car!

Since there is a big demand for this big rides, even car manufacturers that has no production experience is joining the bandwagon. Carmaker Maserati is now looking into competing in the lucrative SUV in the executive segment with its plans of launching their own SUV by 2012.

The CEO of Fiat Chrysler, Sergio Marchionne, shared that the SUV of Maserati will be spawned from the platform of the Grand Cherokee. The new Grand Cherokee actually derived its DNA from the M-Class of Mercedes-Benz. The topman of Fiat-Chrysler also hinted that they may use a Ferrari V8 for the powerplant of the SUV since the car brands are under the same corporate umbrella.

Latest reports about the Maserati SUV though say that the vehicle might not use the V8 from the Italian garage because the Ferrari engine is tuned to go for high revs and not the powerful torque which is required by the SUV.

Marchionne though had it all figured out so Chrysler built a 465 hp 6.4L Hemi which is perfect fit for the platform that will be used plus this choice is a lot cheaper than the Ferrari V8.

When it comes out, it will be unfair to look for the off road grandure of the Cherokee on the Maserati SUV. The Maserati SUV will be geared more towards performance packaged with the plush interior and good on road handling.

Sergio Marchionne, topman of Fiat and Chrysler, shared recently that Maserati is busy preparing to meet head on the Porsche Cayenne with their new SUV.

The Research and Development team of Alfa plans to use the platform of the Grand Cherokee to make a vehicle that can rival the X5 of BMW in the upper end of the consumer spectrum. The new SUV will be side by side with the successor of the 159 and a less pricey compact SUV when Alfa tries to compete in the US market again by 2013.

The plan of making a big SUV was confirmed by Marchionne during a recent conference call with the press. He also hinted about the platform that might be used by Maserati which was originally outlined for the GL, R Class, and M Class of Mercedes-Benz when handled by Daimler Chrysler.

The top executive of the company explains that they are looking into the possible uses of the architecture for present and future Chrysler and non-Chrysler products in the future.

The car manufacturer is also studying the possibilities of using the current line-up of Maserati engines for the new, performance geared SUV. This gives way to the possibility of the new SUV getting the Ferrari made V8 power plants like the ones used for the Quattroporte, Gran Cabrio, and the GramTurismo.

Today a lot of car marques are consider their 4-door coupes as hot commodities. Mercedes-Benz hit it off with the CLS. Other brands like Volkswagen, Aston Martin, and Porsche are also locked on their goals to meet the demand of Quattroporte lovers.

In Italian, Quattroporte literally means four doors. A special car was commissioned by Prince Kharim Aga Khan to the design house of Pietro Frua that really started it all.

Maserati debuted their first Quattroporte in 1963. This caw was fitted with a V8 4.1L engine that produced 256 horsepower mated with a ZF manual gearbox. This first generation Quattroporte was able to hit 143 mph for its top speed.

The second generation was developed during a period when Citroen was in control of the Italian car marques. The car was conceptualized by Bertone but the car’s power decreased to 210 horsepower as it used a V6 3.0L powerplant. That is the bad side of the coin. The good side is the rarity of this Maserati Quattroporte generation since only 13 units were produced. Six of these were prototypes, so only 7 were considered production units.

The next generation Quattroporte was during the time of Alejandro De Tomaso used the design lines of ItalDesign Giugiaro. This car was unwrapped during the Turin motor show of 1979. The car was fited with a V8 4.9l engine that can give out 280 hp. Between 1970 through 1990, the car manufacturer was able to rollout 2110 units.

The Quatrroporte 4th generation is an evolution of the 400-Series cars of Fiat which took control of Maserati back in 1993. Two variants were offered, one had a 284 hp V6 engine and another was more aggressive with 326 hp V8 powerplant. None of the 2375 specimen made it to the US soil.

The current generation Quattroporte is considered to be the greatest of the brood. It follows the sleek design lines of Pininfarina and roars with a 400 horsepower V-8 engine.

Alfa Romeo is already using a Maserati platform for the 8C Competizione but a recent report reveals that we should be expecting more Alfa Romeos riding on the mechanicals of Maserati.

Through the guidance of its mother company, Fiat, Maserati will be developing a platform that it will share with the Alfas. The high end RWD platform is also expected to take the place of the Quattroporte and most likely the convertible and coupe of the Gran Turismo.

According to insiders, the new platform will involve a lot of aluminum content to cut on some weight which is seen as a problem for all the current models of Maserati. The platform will also have an architecture to accommodate the hybrid setup that the Maserati will borrow from the stables of Ferrari. There has been no official announcement yet but a next Quattroporte may be due in two or three year’s time.

Alfa Romeo will also utilize the new platform to create new rear wheel drive units. It is almost certain that Alfa Romeo will come up with a new model to replace the limited edition of their sports car 8C Competizione. The 8C’s success indicates that the price of the car can be sky high if the product is appealing enough.

There is also a loud buzz about a 4C that will have a cheaper tag price of $70,000. This sports car though may not benefit from the Maserati platform which can be too expensive for the model.

The plans have not been disclosed if the new Alfa Romeos will be released as limited edition units or will they form part of the low production range.

Alfa Romeo is also planning to borrow the LX platform from Chyrsler.

Maserati may be on its way to develop a hybrid system for its next generation lineup. It will be part of its campaign to improve the overall fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emission of its vehicles.

Ferrari recently revealed the 599 HY-KERS at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show and Maserati will not allow itself to lag behind. The two luxury brands are no longer under the same Fiat business unit but the Italian stallion has the closest configurations to Maserati. It might be wise for Maserati to use the technology of Ferrari to expedite the process.

Maserati is also looking forward to shed some pounds from their cars which are a bit heavy compared to competition. They may also be looking into slashing the emissions of their cars in the next few years.

The Maserati may be really fit for a hybrid set up. One, the price is a bit lower than the Ferrari’s. They are also seen being driven on the road.

A green clean up is really sweeping the high end of the market with Lamborghini, Ferrari, and now the trident of Maserati turning green.

Luxury car manufacturers are into producing touring, luxury high speed sedans which put their brands on the pedestal. While Aston Martin and Porsche just entered the scene as you may say, Maserati has been on it for years now. Maserati is planning to unveil the Quattroporte Awards Edition at the upcoming motor show in Geneva to celebrate the trophies earned by this Maserati baby.

The Quattroporte was able to rack up about 56 awards from different organizations and press groups in a short span of six years zooming on the road. The car really deserves all the accolades with its beautiful design lines and innate appeal. The credentials of the Maserati Quattroporte though is beyond its skin and relies more on its luxury and performance with its top of the line GT S version.
